Re-planting proposal

Meeting to receive feedback

On Thursday 26th of June, Bishop Ross and Sonia Maugham (the Diocesan manager) will be giving Dion, Mark and Trevor feedback on our proposal.

8th June 2025

The Bishop has sent a letter expressing the support of the Diocesan Council for the vision of the Parish. However, they have indicated that the site at 65 Clyde Road is unfortunately not financially viable for either purchase or lease. The Diocesan Council would like to see the business case continue to develop and are interested in fostering collaborations that could provide the resources necessary to secure a future for the project. Our next step at St Mary by the Sea, is to wait and see where things go with Diocesan Council as they meet with vestry. Vestry will then bring to the parish for consideration the Diocesan Council plans.

Food bank. Please help

Help wanted:- Do you have a couple of hours free in the next couple weeks? If so could you offer some time to help with a stock check on our food bank. Please email the church office if you are able to help and let me know a time that suits you. The stock take is an important part of our food bank management, it allows us to pass on the extra stock we have to other banks that can use it, remove spoiled items and get a clear picture of the items we need donated.

Our food bank is running very low on most stock items. Demand for support is high and this is likely to continue over the winter. We are at critical or no stock levels of canned casseroles, biscuits, UHT cows milk coffee, weetbix small box or large box size.

If you, or someone you know is in need of a little extra support at this time via a food parcel please let Dion or the church office know. We can, by arrangement deliver the box if needed. All referrals are confidential. Referrals for food support can be made to the church office via email or telephone message at any time.
If you know someone who is struggling to provide themself or their family with food at this time of year please reach out to them to discuss a referral to our food bank. The simple question of 'Can I help?' to start the conversation is often all that is needed.
As winter settles in, many families face impossible choices – keeping warm or putting food on the table, providing basic necessities or simply making it through another day. No one should have to choose between comfort and survival.
That’s why the Whakamahana to Kāinga – Winter Appeal is more than just a collection drive – it’s about love, dignity, and reminding every whānau that they are not alone. You can make a donation on the link below.

Community Shop. 6th Anniversary

On Matariki, our shop celebrates being open for 6 years. Our volunteers and their partners are invited to lunch on that day to thank them and to celebrate our anniversary.

We began in 2019 and for the first two years worked from the shop next to the Binn Inn in Inverness Road. Four years ago we shifted into our present premises at 38/2 Clyde Road [which, confusingly, is still in Inverness Road]
At first the shop was staffed exclusively by the Congregation of St Mary by the Sea but gradually our volunteers from the community have increased and now outnumber us 2 : 1. Our ministry in this area has developed into a mutually helpful service for volunteers who do the work for various reasons.

We often have been fortunate, over the years to have been able to assist by
· Sending electrical appliances and clothing to Tonga after their eruption and tsunami.
· Sending children’s clothing to the Plunket Nurse in Taumarunui for desperate families there.
· Giving children’s clothing to the local Plunket Society.

For ourselves, we have learned a great deal about running a business, experience great satisfaction in turning rejected items into cash and are delighted as our customers get great bargains when they buy our goods.

If you are interested in going on the Community shop roster please contact Fay on weatherlyfay@gmail.com

Celebrations

60th Wedding Anniversary/ vow renewal. Congratulations to David and Patricia Wareham (our neighbours) who are celebrating their 60th Wedding Anniversary on Saturday (21st June) by renewing their vows at St Mary at 2pm. Please remember them, their family and friends in your prayers as they celebrate.

Thank you to all those who volunteer their time, skills and aroha to St Mary by the Sea. We appreciate you.
This week is National Volunteer Week, 15-21 June 2025, it is Aotearoa’s largest annual celebration of volunteering. This year’s theme – Whiria te tangata – weaving the people together – speaks to the way volunteering strengthens communities and builds connection.
Every year one of the big jobs I have to do is to calculate the number of volunteer hours donated to St Mary by the Sea. We have an amazing array of people that volunteer their time, often quietly, unassuming but vital in keeping everything running smoothly. WE THANK YOU.
And for those interested, the number of volunteer hours in 2024 was just over 10,300.

Happy Birthday Audrey Stafford for the 30th June. Many happy returns.
If you have a celebration that you would like to share with the congregation via the newsletter please email the church office on the email below. Please let the office know before 9am on the Tuesday before.
