Shrove Tuesday
Pancake day
One of our traditions over Lent is to give up something, so that we may focus more intently on preparing for Easter and the Resurection. This often involved going without some food (fasting), and a tradition built up that before Lent began we would feast on the last of the eggs through having a family pancake day called Shrove Tuesday. Long ago, chickens were older breeds and would not have laid eggs in the winter. So people would have been eating up the last of the preserved eggs, which were probably coming to the end of their preservation period anyway. By Easter Day, the chickens would be starting to lay eggs again. Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent was a good excuse for pancakes, to be extravagant before Lent began that was a serious time and people weren't encouraged to be extravagant.

|
The encouragement is that you make some pancakes with the recipe below. Then share in a time of reflection with those in your bubble. If you live by yourself, arrange a call or face time with a friend or family member and share with them.
|
Pancake Recipe (serves 2, easily doubles or triples)
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup self-raising flour
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
- 1 tsp of sugar
- In a big bowl place milk, vanilla essence and sugar
- Separate the egg, leave the white in one bowl, and place egg yolk in the big bowl with the milk.
- Put the flour into the milk and gently beat until smooth
- Beat the egg white so it is just forming peaks
- Gently fold the egg white into the batter until there are no white lumps
Cooking: I like to cook in a cast iron pan with a little bit of butter. This also makes great waffles if you prefer.

Lent Study Groups
Visio Divina
|
|
During Lent there will be an opportunity to delve into the scriptures deeper through a process called Visio Divina. Study groups are online Wednesday 12:30pm. Studies begin Wednesday 24th February.
|
Visio Divina, latin for “divine seeing,” is a method of meditation, reflection, and prayer through a process of intentional seeing. Visio Divina extends the 6th century Benedictine practice of Lectio Divina by the use of visual imagery. Traditionally, Visio Divina was accompanied by Benedictine iconography and illuminations, however, different faith traditions have adapted the process over time, utilizing both secular and nonsecular images.
