The beginning of the Maori lunar year begins with the rising of Matariki also known as the 7 sisters or the Pleiades. It is a time of celebration that comprises of remembering those who have passed, giving thanks for the natural bounty of the earth, gathering as whanau around a meal and planning for the future.
At 10am we will be using these three themes to guide our worship.
Our New Year celebrations are influenced by multiple different cultural practices. We have the secular New Year on the 1st January, influenced by the Gregorian calendar. Prior to that for Protestants the Annunciation was considered the beginning of the year on March 25th. We also have the Lectionary/Seasonal based new year that begins in Advent. Some of us celebrate Chinese New Year, still others might celebrate Dilwali. What these celebrations offer us is a time to reflect and connect with one another and give thanks and pray for the coming year. Matariki is another such celebration that has special connection with our whenua and it is good to celebrate this as part of our bicutural and multicultural journey.

ATWC Winter Readiness Campaign
As winter approaches, the AWTC starts another Hōtoke Whakaritea - Winter Readiness Campaign and they need your support.
This season, the reality is stark: 1 in 8 children will face the biting cold without the warmth they desperately need. We see the impacts of this extending beyond physical discomfort; it deeply affects their education and overall well-being. This is why initiatives like our Winter Readiness Campaign are necessary to make a real difference!
The aim is to raise funds to create winter packs tailored to families' needs – this could mean contributions towards kai, clothing, and support for necessities.
Support our mission of keeping children warm this winter by donating now on our website.

Scam Aware
It is unfortunate that there is a growth in the number of scams out there. Please remember that no one should ask you for your personal banking details, log ins. There have been reports that some scam cold callers have pretended to be police officers, even having fake ID with them. Scams often come via cold calls/ texts / house visits. Anyone cold calling at your home should not be allowed entry and you should always exercise your right to check ID independently, (not using a phone number provided by the caller).

Some Great news:-
We applied for and received a grant from the Food Insecurity Network Funding from Woolworths NZ for the food-bank. These funds will enable us to take part in a short term trial of the Good Works Trust Community Supermarket. This funding is only for a few weeks but it is a great opportunity. Thank you to everyone involved in this application and running this trial.

If you or someone you know is in need of a little extra support at this time via a food parcel please let Dion or the church office know. We can, by arrangement deliver the box if needed. All referrals are confidential. Referrals for food support can be made to the church office via email or telephone message at any time. These messages are checked regularly and a reply can be expected within 48 hours. If you know someone who is struggling to provide themself or their family with food at this time of year please reach out to them to discuss a referral to our food bank. The simple question of 'Can I help?' to start the conversation is often all that is needed.
