St Mary by the Sea Direction Setting

planning day-small
Please join us for our planning day Sunday 26th June 2022 after the 10am service. Ven Jonathan Gale will be with us and lead us through, "What we have said about ourselves", lunch, and then help to to dream about "where to from here." Please bring something to share for lunch.
We are setting our direction at St Mary by the Sea. Our leadership team is called vestry, and they, along with other leaders within St Mary are embarking on setting a direction for us for the next 5 years. To do this well we need to know where we are and what we think our strengths are. So we would like feedback from you. Please take the opportunity to contribute into our direction setting by completing the survey. The survey opened Sun 15 May 12 noon, and closes Monday 30th May 2022. Please make the most of the opportunity to give us feedback to help us set direction. The survey link is here: https://www.beyondconsulting.co.nz/OnlineServices/Survey/mu2/mu2.htm

Glorifying God, the Holy Trinity

Our goal is to Glorify God, the Holy Trinity.
To do this we recognise that there are four key aspects to our life here at St Mary by the Sea.
  1. Knowing God
  2. Shaping Community
  3. Growing in Christ
  4. Living Beyond Ourselves
Slide25
In each area we recognise the following as important.

Knowing God

Inspiring Worship

Authentic, prayerful worship and joyous music that engages hearts and minds in glorifying God, which appeals to various generations and is relevant to the cultures/contexts in which we live. Well delivered, thoughtful and sound sermons, which apply God’s word in practical ways, promoting growth in faith and inspiring people to Christian action.

Vibrant Faith and Prayerful Life

Actively seeking the Holy Spirit’s direction and empowerment for daily life and ministry. Faith is lived out with commitment and answered prayer is celebrated. Enthusiasm about how God is working in the faith community. Active promotion and practice of prayer and bible study.

Shaping Community

Authentic Loving Community

Efforts to build loving, caring relationships between members, creating a strong sense of community within the Ministry Unit (MU). Invites, and displays hospitality toward the inclusion of newcomers, children and youth, as well as members into active participation in congregational life.

Stewardship & Governance

Teaches biblical stewardship and provides opportunities for generosity. Church operates the annual budget with financial integrity and accountability. Provides effective communication regarding decisions and activities.

Growing in Christ

Maturing Discipleship

Takes seriously the formation of disciples, nurturing spiritual maturity through relevant Christian education and encouraging all to grow in their walk with God and share their faith.

Gift Oriented Ministry

Challenges and equips members to discover, develop, and use their gifts for fruitful ministry. Identifies, trains, and empowers members for ministry.

Empowering Leadership

Led by leadership who demonstrates the calling, character, and competence to help the Ministry Unit achieve its God-given purpose and shared vision. Clergy are committed to developing and empowering lay leaders and identifying and training next generation leaders. Leadership builds optimism and hope even in challenging times and is open to innovative solutions.

Living Beyond Ourselves

Relevant Outreach

    Tax returns an update.

Please read all of this carefully, there is information that may effect you.

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone for the contributions you have made to St Mary by the Sea for the tax year ending April 30 2022. It is donations such as yours that have enabled us to continue the work of the church, providing opportunities for worship and service, along with the hosting of our much-valued community programmes.

Trust Management, our accountant, have just finished preparing everyone's tax receipt for the last year. If you have had a change of address or email in the last year please inform the church office so your details can be corrected with them. If you are happy to receive your tax receipt by email but have previously received this by post please contact the church office confirming the address you would like the receipt to be sent to.

The church office will be emailing out receipts this week. For those who have not registered for your tax receipt via email a printed copy will be available from the church for collection Sunday from the credenza. Thank you to everyone for your patience in waiting for these. Covid has caused unavoidable delays.

Again, thank you for continuing to bless St Mary by the Sea with your support and generosity.

Thank you. A message from the church office.

As some of you will know my family, like a million other New Zealanders, fell to victim to Covid 3 weeks ago. It was the Mother's Day present no one wanted!. Over the last 3 weeks, despite our best efforts, everyone in our house has been constantly in various stages of illness and isolation. As a result the church office has been closed or working at reduced hours. I thank you all for your patience.

I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone for their prayers, love and support. Thank you to everyone who stepped up and covered church tasks in my absence.

Secondly, to remind everyone that St Mary's Buddy Family System is still operating. Should you or your family unfortunately fall victim of Covid please feel free to call the church office of text Dion and we can arrange grocery or prescription collections, check in calls or other support.
    SMbtS Buddy Family
Lastly a reminder; if you or a member of your family hasn't had a vaccination or is due booster please look at getting this now. Covid isn't pleasant and vaccination supports not only you but those you love and live with.

    Community Shop

Now open Tuesday - Saturday inclusive 10am to 4pm.

Our takings of the Community shop in April was $8800, expenses have to be taken from this.

Our Community Shop is now selling winter clothing and this is going well. If anyone has had a wardrobe clear out and has winter clothing they no longer want please donate this to our store where we can put it to good use. The Community shop has established a route via which we can send excess goods to Tonga to aid with their recovery after they experienced the terrible tsunami earlier this year.

It is great to think that our Community shop is not only helping support St Mary by the Sea, but also providing financial support via food vouchers to local schools and to those in need in the local community and is providing assistance in Tonga.

Thank you to our Community Shop Volunteers

Many thanks also to our band of about 30 volunteers who staff the shop, manage it and generally keep it going.

On Sunday 29th May, all who volunteer at the Community Shop [with their partners/wives/husbands] are invited to lunch at the home of Susan and Eric Haslam, 59 Mahoenui Valley Road, Coatesville at 12 midday. This is to say thankyou for the wonderful way in which they have kept the shop running despite Covid and other problems. It also marks the third anniversary of the opening of the shop and the first anniversary of our move to 2/38 Clyde Road. We are looking forward to seeing you all.

    Introducing RAFT

Currently occupying the space under the church hall.

Raft studio in Torbay is a 'walk in and create' space where locals can spend time learning new Arts and Crafts - help others learn the crafts they know or just enjoy hanging out and socializing.

Our team of 6 (plus the entourage of family and friends) has come together to create this warm and inviting space where we encourage creativity to help with wellness as well as connect our community. Our team are Helen, Jan, Jen, Lorraine, Ruth and Tanya.

We offer classes in different craft mediums including sewing, papercraft, mixed media, painting and Art Therapy as well as many more. As our Studio is a not-for-profit organization, we aim to donate back into our community through offering low cost classes and free workshops. Cost is from free to $20per class, with private workshops being no more than $55.

Our studio space has been gifted to us by St Mary by the Sea, which we are very grateful for and enjoy the lovely relationship we have created between SMBTS and our team. To stay focused on our low waste and recycled ethos, we rely on community donations of materials and equipment - we aim to recycle and reuse as much as possible and have joined the Zero Waste initiative with Auckland council. 80% of our materials and tools have been donated and saved from landfill.

We welcome you to wander through our spaces and see how we operate and achieve the goals we set for ourselves and those who join our studio.

Next time you are in Torbay, please come in and say Hi, or check out our website for more information www.raftstudios.co.nz.
    Regards,
    The team at Raft.
