the Anglican Church of Auckland governs itself (through setting rules and direction) through a gathering called synod. St Mary by the Sea sends two representatives to this (Auriel and Connie), along with myself and Jay. Synod asked two years ago for two key bits of work to be undertaken. Firstly to look at how synod is structured, and particularly if it is fit for purpose today. The second task was to look at our buildings and what ways ahead might look like for us as a Diocese.
This week we had the yearly Ministry Conference for the Anglican Diocese of Auckland, We we engaged with both of these issues.
The conversations around synod structure are just beginning. The conversations around our aging buildings and what to do about these is well advanced. We explored options of combining with other congregations, selling older buildings, saving money for the future, and designating buildings of significance that we all contribute to, like the first church in Russel Northland. None of these are easy conversations, but they are happening Diocese wide as we grapple with what shape the future will take. The reality is that our Diocese has more buildings than our current structure and finances can manage and maintain.
As I reflect on the conference and conversations and engage with the story of Jesus calming the storm and David and Goliath, I’m looking for the links between these stories and our story.
Please join us on Sunday as we explore more fully the links.

ATWC Winter Readiness Campaign
As winter approaches, the AWTC starts another Hōtoke Whakaritea - Winter Readiness Campaign and they need your support.
This season, the reality is stark: 1 in 8 children will face the biting cold without the warmth they desperately need. We see the impacts of this extending beyond physical discomfort; it deeply affects their education and overall well-being. This is why initiatives like our Winter Readiness Campaign are necessary to make a real difference!
The aim is to raise funds to create winter packs tailored to families' needs – this could mean contributions towards kai, clothing, and support for necessities.
Support our mission of keeping children warm this winter by donating now on our website.

Scam Aware
It is unfortunate that there is a growth in the number of scams out there. Please remember that no one should ask you for your personal banking details, log ins. There have been reports that some scam cold callers have pretended to be police officers, even having fake ID with them. Scams often come via cold calls/ texts / house visits. Anyone cold calling at your home should not be allowed entry and you should always exercise your right to check ID independently, (not using a phone number provided by the caller).

Food Bank
Thank you for the amazing response to last weeks call out for supplies.
Demand on our food bank has remained steady but our supplies are running out on some of our base items. The supplies we received from the schools are now running low or out and we will need, again, to closely monitor our stocks to ensure that we are able to remain a local resource. I am aware that the current economic climate makes finances more challenging for many. Please be mindful of your own budgeting needs, but if you are able to make a donation to this mission please consider doing so.
If you are able to add an item to your shopping for donation that would be gratefully received. What we need:-
We are OUT OF STOCK on sugar, can rice pudding, powdered milk, hot chocolate/ Milo (child friendly hot drink)
We are URGENT on canned soup, bread wraps
We are VERY LOW on canned tomatoes, canned meat (not fish), breakfast cereals (not porridge), small boxes of black tea bags.
Thank you for your donations.
Despite our low stock our food bank remains open.If you or someone you know is in need of a little extra support at this time via a food parcel please let Dion or the church office know. We can, by arrangement deliver the box if needed. All referrals are confidential. Referrals for food support can be made to the church office via email or telephone message at any time. These messages are checked regularly and a reply can be expected within 48 hours. If you know someone who is struggling to provide themself or their family with food at this time of year please reach out to them to discuss a referral to our food bank. The simple question of 'Can I help?' to start the conversation is often all that is needed.
